我前一陣子在一個(美國)電視新聞上看到一則美國中學發的新聞稿，裡頭用 scholars 稱呼學校裡的學生(*1)，我這才注意到這字的另一意思。好奇之下我查了字典：

題外話。多年前我曾在網路英文討論區遇過一個類似情況。一位網友說某英文字的中文翻譯也有某意思（太久以前的事了，我忘了是哪個字）。其他人提出疑問，於是他引字典定義，類似這樣：
student:
1 :SCHOLAR, LEARNER
基本上就相當於因為有看到 scholar 所以就認為那是「學者」，因此做出了類似「student 也有『學者』的意思」這樣的結論(*2)。於是我跟他說這種字典定義情況不能只看一個字，要全部一起看，比如 “learner” 就是個很好的線索，這表示 scholar 還有其他意思，所以是指 “learner” 這方面的意思。當然也要進一步查證(以此例來說就是查 scholar)。我那時也有進一步查證，確實，他說的那字有另外的意思，不是只有他以為的那意思而已。
